How to make money from open source contributions
You can earn from open source without owning a popular project. The routes below are ordered by how quickly a new contributor can get a first payment, not by how big the ceiling is.
1. Issue bounties (fastest first payment)
A company or maintainer puts money on a GitHub issue and pays whoever gets the pull request merged. Platforms include Algora, Opire, IssueHunt, BountyHub and TaskBounty. This is the only route where you can pick a task today and be paid within days of a merge. 2. Sponsorship and donations
GitHub Sponsors, Open Collective, Liberapay and Polar.sh let people fund you or a project regularly. It pays for reputation you already have, so it is slow to start and works best after you maintain something people depend on.
3. Paid maintainer or contributor jobs

4. Freelancing on the projects you already know
Deep knowledge of one repository is billable: integration, migration and support work for companies that use it. Bounties are a low-risk way to build that knowledge and the public record that proves it.
5. Security bounties

How to start with bounties
Pick issues that are fresh, have no competing pull request and sit in a stack you already use. Comment to claim only when the platform requires it, keep the change small, and follow the repository contribution guide.
